THE ROAD TO TANIS A Warmaster scenario, by Rick Wynn GROUND: A desert, with some hills, oases (marsh), and rocky ground. There is a valley of clear terrain at least 30cm wide along the long axis of the table (North-South); this is the ancient road to long-lost Tanis. FORCES, ATTACKER: 2000 points of Empire. Steam Tanks may not be selected. FORCES, DEFENDER: 1000 points of Khemrian Undead, plus skeletons to be raised. DEPLOYMENT: The game is played along the long axis of the table. The attacking Imperial forces deploy anywhere they like within 30cm of the North edge (one of the short table edges). The defending Khemrian forces then deploy anywhere in the southern half of the table. PLAY: Empire takes the first turn. There is no time limit; the game ends when all Empire units have left the table (either voluntarily, or through destruction or army withdrawal). SPECIAL RULES: (a) The Valley of Makh-Tanis was a frequent site of battles in the Khemrian dynasty; every acre of sand covers the bones of Khemrian dead. Hence there is ample material everywhere for the Liche Priests to animate. The Undead liche priests can cast Raise Dead _anywhere_, not just in melees. Also, they are +1 to cast Raise Dead. (b) The Imperial player may choose to have any artillery present in March Column. This is shown by placing the guns of a unit in column (if there are more than one stand), facing away from the enemy, and announcing the march column formation. Artillery in March Column must be given a separate order to resume regular status. While in March Column, artillery cannot fire but moves at infantry rate. VICTORY CONDITIONS: The Undead will not withdraw and have no breakpoint. The Empire army does have a breakpoint, but units which leave the table voluntarily do not count as destroyed. If the Empire army is forced to withdraw, they automatically lose. Otherwise, total the point value of Imperial units that successfully exit the South Edge, and add to that total the point value of Undead characters and non-infantry units destroyed. The Empire wins if this total is 1000 or more.
